What have I read this week?

The Sixth Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko

This is a fantasy novel, and the last in the series, about a Light Other named Anton Gorodetsky who is a member of the Night Watch which keeps an eye on the doings of Dark Others. I enjoyed this: I like the world and the characters, and I found the plot interesting. I would definitely read more by this author.

Summer Bird Blue by Akemi Dawn Bowman

This is a YA novel about a teenage girl named Rumi, whose sister dies in a car crash. I didn’t like this; I found the main character annoying and didn’t like the plot. I probably won’t read more by this author.

The Secret Casebook of Simon Feximal by KJ Charles

This is a horror novel about a man named Robert Caldwell, who becomes the companion of a ghost hunter named Simon Feximal. I enjoyed this; the world is interesting and I liked how characters from other novels set in the period were worked in. I would definitely read more by this author.

What have I read this week?

The Final Strife by Saara El-Arifi

This is a fantasy novel about an empire where the colour of your blood indicates your place in it, and two young women who may be about to change that. I couldn’t really get into this one; I didn’t find the characters interesting and didn’t really care what happened to them, so I didn’t finish it. I probably wouldn’t read more by this author.

The New Watch by Sergei Lukyanenko

This is a fantasy novel about a Light Other named Anton Gorodetsky who is a member of the Night Watch which keeps an eye on the doings of Dark Others. I enjoyed this: I like the world and the characters, and I found the plot interesting. I would definitely read more by this author.

Appliance by J. O. Morgan

This is a science fiction novel about the invention of a teleportation device and the effect it has on the world. I found this interesting – it really showed the kind of impact a technology like that might have. I would probably read more by this author.

Loveless by Alice Oseman

What have I read this week? It’s late, sorry.

In The Dream House by Carmen Maria Machado

This is a book about an abusive relationship between two women. It’s a bit hard to describe, as it’s written in short fragments, looking at the relationship from a lot of different angles. I did like it though, and would definitely read more by this author.

The Lessons by Naomi Alderman

This is a novel about a young man named James who goes to Oxford for university and becomes friends with a group of much richer people. I found this interesting, although I didn’t particularly like most of the characters. I did like seeing how James changed as he became more involved with these new friends. I would definitely read more by this author.

Everything I Never Told You by Celeste Ng

This is a novel about a family whose oldest daughter dies suddenly and the effect that has on the rest of the family. I enjoyed this, although it is quite sad. I would definitely read more by this author.

Carmilla by J. Sheridan Le Fanu

This is a vampire novel about a young woman who meets a strange young woman named Carmilla. I found the story interesting, although the style didn’t mesh that well with me. I might read more by this author.

Exquisite Corpse by Billy Martin

This is a horror novel about two serial killers who join forces with each other. It’s difficult to say I liked this; it was definitely well written but the subject matter is pretty disturbing. I would probably read more by this author.

The Liar’s Gospel by Naomi Alderman

This is a novel about the life of Jesus told through the eyes of various people who knew or came into contact with him. I liked this; the characters were interesting and I liked the multiple viewpoints. I would read more by this author.
